Most homes in Cusco are on streets behind a big wall, and all the front doors are lined up several yards from each other. Behind the front doors there are huge palace-like homes with open-air courtyards. This is also how they were able to "shape" the town into a Puma figure - one of the three sacred animals in Peru. One can see the Puma shape from really high up or on a map.The homes were built in the Inca style over 500 years ago. When the Spaniards conquered the city they took the homes and changed them to be Spanish colonial style. Today, Rumi Punku (our hotel) still has mostly colonial architecture, with some bits of Inca style and also modern reconstruction. It's really charming and clean and they have great service and a really nice breakfast included in the price :)
